Do you worry about (or avoid) certain situations for fear of panic attacks/shortness of breath/stomach distress/intrusive thoughts of anticipated catastrophe? Do you stay up at night worrying about that thing you said/did/didn’t do/remembered/forgot/found on WebMD's symptom checker? Do you have specific fears that paralyze you? You may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety sucks, therapy can help! I specialize in helping you put anxiety in its rightful place. Every emotion needs a place at the table, but when anxiety is the loudest (or only) voice life becomes out of balance, and our choices no longer feel like conscious decisions. My approach is based on balancing acceptance and change. I operate from a person-centered humanistic perspective. That means I offer a non-judgmental safe place to work on issues that don't always feel so safe, using warmth and humor. I incorporate EMDR, mindfulness based therapy, self-compassion, attachment work, and CBT anxiety reduction strategies. I believe in this work, and have seen the healing that is possible when people find the right treatment. If the time has come for you to move toward change and create some balance I would love to help! Please email me to set up a consultation call.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we will look at what is bringing you into therapy. I will give you an idea at the end of session what I think might be helpful for you moving forward. I believe first sessions are at least partly about making sure that you are comfortable with me as your therapist. While there are many factors that lead to successful outcomes for therapy, being comfortable with your therapist is non-negotiable. If there are any questions that you have for me, or if there is anything you need me to know about how to increase your comfort in this process, the initial session is a great place to do this.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My treatment methods

EMDR

I have been practicing EMDR for the past 6 years and I use it to treat both trauma, and difficult life events that my clients are having trouble letting go of (sometimes called Big T and little t traumas).

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT interventions such as thought challenging, sleep hygiene and behavioral activation, are strategies that I use with my clients as appropriate, although I am definitely not a strict CBT therapist.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I have been personally meditating for the past 15 years, and have been integrating mindfulness therapeutically for the past decade. The idea of mindfulness in therapy is not to become a champion meditator, it is not even necessarily to become a mediator at all. What we are looking at is how to build your ability to pay attention to what you want to pay attention to, and develop more awareness of your internal experience. This can be beneficial for mental health in numerous ways, including learning to be able to choose not to follow thought patterns that have become harmful, and being able to develop an awareness of emotional reactions earlier so as to have an opportunity to intervene before they become more challenging to tame.

Humanistic

My therapeutic style is rooted in humanistic therapy. What this means for me is that I truly believe that you are okay as you are, and that a big piece of therapy is about accepting yourself as you are. That doesn't mean that you can't want to make changes, and that you don't have behaviors or thought patterns that are holding you back. For me the balance between acceptance and change is the sweet spot where growth can truly take place.
