Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps clients by teaching them skills to manage emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and reduce harmful behaviors. Therapists use DBT by focusing on four main areas: mindfulness (being present), distress tolerance (handling crises without escalation), emotion regulation (understanding and controlling emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (assertive communication). The therapist provides both individual therapy and skills training in a group setting, using a balance of validation (acknowledging the client’s struggles) and problem-solving to foster change.
