After losing my mother to cancer a few days shy of my 21st birthday, I originally went into social work to become a grief counselor. I soon learned that people grieve all sorts of losses over their lives (e.g. divorce, developing a disability, having a special needs child, etc.). If you’re struggling with grief, depression, anxiety or trauma, I can help.
During the first session, the client and I review their social history and background information, and discuss what they're hoping to get out of therapy.
One of my strengths is my ability to help client's identify the root of their challenges rather than just treating the symptoms. My job is not to force a client to tell me everything immediately, but at their own speed after a trusting relationship is established. When it comes to approaches, I utilize a combination that best fits each client’s needs and treatment goals. Some of these include emotion focused, CBT, DBT, attachment based, and motivational interviewing.
I assist clients with recognizing how their relationship with their primary caregivers has shaped how they think and interact with their significant others.
Ignoring and suppressing your emotions leads to greater suffering. I show clients how acknowledging and feeling their "negative" emotions is the first step towards healing.
I assist clients with identifying their cognitive distortions and negative thought patterns that are holding them back from their true potential.
In my sessions, I educate clients on the importance of self-compassion and letting go of shame.
I assist clients with identifying and building on their personal strengths.
