Hello there! My name is Meaghan, and I use the pronouns they/them. I am a therapist based in Chicago, and I identify as queer and nonbinary. Living with anxiety, worries, and fears can make every day feel like a struggle. Even activities that once brought joy can suddenly become stressful. It can be tough to feel confident and fulfilled when you don't feel supported in your school, workplace, or home. I specialize in helping teenagers and adults build confidence in their identity, navigate interpersonal relationships, and make tough decisions. My focus is on supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community, neurodivergent individuals, and parents of children who exhibit challenging behaviors. I am eager to work with you and help you along your journey. Let's get started!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start by creating a welcoming space and beginning to develop rapport. I do not expect you to be ready to speak openly during our first session. I'll take the time to get to know you, your background, and your reasons for seeking therapy. We'll discuss your goals, concerns, and any specific areas you'd like to focus on. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions about the therapy process and share any preferences or expectations you have. Additionally, I'll provide some information about confidentiality and boundaries to ensure you feel secure in our therapeutic relationship. This initial session is a chance for us to begin building trust and rapport, laying the groundwork for our work together. It's also a space for you to begin to think about whether or not WE fit! It is VERY important that you feel good about your therapist.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My treatment methods

Psychodynamic

With a deep understanding of how past experiences shape present behaviors and emotions, I create a safe and supportive space for exploration and insight. Through compassionate listening, skilled interpretation, and Socratic questioning, I help clients uncover unconscious patterns, unresolved conflicts, and relational dynamics that may be impacting their lives. Guiding clients through a journey of self-discovery and growth, I hold space for them to gain greater self-awareness, improve their relationships, and foster meaningful change. My approach is rooted in empathy, a deep commitment to my community [you], and belief in each individual's capacity for healing and transformation.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

In my therapy practice, I complement a primarily psychodynamic approach with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) strategies when appropriate and meaningful to offer a comprehensive and personalized approach to healing and growth. I provide clients with a holistic toolkit for addressing both the underlying roots of their concerns and the practical strategies for managing them in the present. Incorporating CBT techniques can help clients to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, develop coping skills, and foster behavior change. This integrative approach allows clients to gain insight into their Self [through psychodynamic therapy] while also equipping them with practical tools to navigate life's challenges with confidence and support.

Gender-affirming therapy

I am committed to providing gender-affirming care to individuals of all gender identities. Through affirmative practices, I collaborate with clients to address issues such as gender dysphoria, social transitioning, navigating relationships, navigating societal systems, and healthcare. Sometimes gender-affirming therapy can be related to gender identity, expression, and perception, and sometimes it can be talking-about-anything-else with a therapist that is well-versed in queer/trans culture.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

The dropdown menu says "culturally sensitive therapy" but I would rather it say decolonial therapy. In my practice, I prioritize incorporating decolonial therapy principles to ensure an inclusive and intentional approach to healing. I strive to create a safe and affirming space for clients, which often means acknowledging the historical and systemic factors that have influenced clients' lived experiences. Through a lens of decoloniality, I work collaboratively with clients to challenge Eurocentric norms and assumptions that may perpetuate power imbalances and marginalization within the therapeutic relationship. I center values of cultural humility, intersectionality, and community in my practice and aspire to support clients to reclaim agency over their narratives and identities. Together, we explore how societal structures impact mental health and well-being while honoring diverse ways of knowing and being (non-dominant narratives). My commitment to decolonial therapy fosters deep and meaningful connections between me and my clients.
