All of us face challenges in dealing with what life can often throw at us. Sometimes we need some help or an outside perspective that we can trust and feel safe with to assist us to see these challenges in a new light. As this can be an intimidating process for some, I strive to create a safe and trusting space for folks to begin to face their challenges. My name is Jeremy D. Bailey and I am a licensed clinical social worker with 14 years of extensive clinical experience. I specialize in anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and also focus on those who have faced trauma, depression/mood disorders, LGBTQI+ issues, PTSD, life transitions, grief/loss, job/social stressors and stress management issues.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

For first sessions I introduce myself and experience, go over the parameters of how our sessions are structured and briefly review aspects of confidentiality. I then want to hear from the clients via the intake process as to why they are seeking treatment at this time and inquire about the frequency, intensity, and duration of their stated symptoms and how they are affecting their lives/functionality. I'll ask some questions about their related background, history, current situation, along with any previous treatment and what they learned. I then encourage the clients to ask me questions about my experience, how I may treat their presenting problem, solicit feedback as I want them to feel safe and state if what I'm doing for them is working or making sense to them or not at anytime in our treatment together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I know what it's like to live with some of these challenges as I've faced chronic anxiety and OCD myself. Through my personal history and 14 years of professional experience, I bring a unique perspective to your treatment as I've implemented many of the associated treatment strategies towards my own struggles with much success. I know through my own experience you can free yourself from your symptoms and mental health challenges. I strive to be as authentic and accessible as these sessions are really about what you want to achieve. My role therefore is one of empowerment, support, and education as I introduce many concepts and coping skills in sessions, but the real work of change takes place in between sessions where you apply these concepts in the real world to promote lasting change.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is such a broad intervention and I tailor its use to meet the needs of my individual clients. Typically I use CBT to uncover any faulty thinking which can exacerbate many mental health symptoms and to build related insight. We can then explore the related automatic thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and resulting behaviors to see what needs to be changed. Further exploration of the origins of the faulty thinking can also lead to much valued insight and healing. This process at times can uncover some core beliefs that client may have about themselves and their place in the world that are reinforcing their unwanted mental health symptoms. Finally with the insight, origins explored, and supplied coping tools this process can also be used to replace long standing unwanted behaviors that are at the root of some of a clients mental health symptoms.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I employ aspects of DBT that involve the introduction and use of mindfulness techniques which teaches the client, in this context, how to learn to be present which can offer much relief for those who suffer from depression (looking in the past) or with chronic anxiety (which typically looks at the future). Like CBT this can be used to build more insight into their presenting problems and to come up with ways to change unwanted cycles of feelings and associated behaviors.

Psychodynamic

I utilize aspects of the psycho-dynamic approach via exploring the subconscious motivations for any unwanted behaviors or related thoughts along with the defense mechanisms at play that can be used to prevent desired changes. It's also employed to explore the range of associated feelings involved with a clients presenting problem and related symptoms.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)

I mainly utilize exposure treatment for clients suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This intervention involves the systematic: identification of the clients fears, obsessions, and the related compulsions/rituals clients use to feel better or to alleviate associated fears, we then rate these fears on a distress scale where they are ranked from lowest to highest, then with much support and time we structure ways to in turn face these fears to dispel the inaccurate beliefs that fuel OCD's unwanted behaviors.
