What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Entering therapy can be a daunting step for anyone grappling with addiction, but understanding what to expect can significantly alleviate anxiety. As a therapist with over 28 years of experience in the addiction field, my approach to the first session is designed to foster a sense of safety, trust, and hope. This initial meeting is crucial for setting the tone of our therapeutic relationship and laying the groundwork for effective treatment. The initial session provides ample time for the client to ask questions and express any concerns. Addressing these openly is crucial in developing a strong therapeutic working alliance while alleviating any fears or reservations some may have about starting therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As the Director of the post-master's program in Addictions at NYU I am regularly engaged with the most current and innovative treatment models/practices available

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy emphasizes the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a method of therapy that works to engage the motivation of clients to change their behavior. Clients are encouraged to explore and confront their ambivalence. Therapists attempt to influence their clients to consider making changes, rather than non-directively explore themselves. Motivational Interviewing is frequently used to treat alcohol, misuse, and multiple addictions.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Solution-focused therapy, sometimes called "brief therapy," focuses on what clients would like to achieve through therapy rather than on their troubles or mental health issues. The therapist will help the client envision a desirable future, and then map out the small and large changes necessary for the client to undergo to realize their vision.

Trauma-Focused CBT

Trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) helps people who may be experiencing post-traumatic stress after a traumatic event to return to a healthy state.
