My name is Brooke Nelms, and I’m thankful to have this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor who works with individuals between the ages of 15-55 struggling with adjustment, dysregulated moods, attachment concerns, and interpersonal relationship struggles among other goals. After graduating high school, I gained my B.A. in Behavioral Science majoring in Psychology and Sociology and an Associates in Criminal Justice from Arkansas Tech University. I went on to obtain my M.S. majoring in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from John Brown University. I have committed myself to helping others find peace and fulfillment in their daily life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll begin with background information on what brought you to therapy. We will work collaboratively to identify the specific challenges you're facing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions. You will also complete assessments before our initial appointment to create your baseline for monitoring progress during the therapeutic experience.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

While completing my education, I worked as a Qualified Behavioral Health Provider and had the honor of serving children 5-19 years of age in the Van Buren mainstream school district and Alternative Learning Environment. Post Graduate school, at the start of my career in Texas, I had the privilege of working with an Intensive Outpatient Program for substance use and criminal conduct rehabilitation. Working with these populations early in my career challenged me to connect with a wide range of personality types. I believe when we learn to reframe the negative self-talk that keeps us from making changes, we can grow beyond measure. I have had special training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) by Compassion Works, a EMDRIA approved training organization. EMDR is an approach which is used to re-work the way ‘stuck’ memories are stored by the brain. I was led to this skillset when I found that many adolescents that I worked with during my graduate program were not seeing progress in their regular talk therapy sessions. Some of these children had been in therapy for years with minimal change in their ability to self-regulate and cope with adjustments. I have personally witnessed and experienced that moment where the subconscious guides you to healing what your conscious is stopping you from working through.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT in sessions to assist clients in learning to recognize how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. We then use that knowledge to change destructive thinking patterns, which helps individuals lead a less anxious and stressed life.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I use DBT in sessions with individuals who struggle with staying safe, acting on impulse, mood dysregulation, and experience instability in interpersonal relationships. We then work to increase client resilience and build a life they feel is whole-hearted.

EMDR

EMDR is a distinct 8-Phase integrative psychotherpy that combines aspects of multiple psychotheraputic orientations. In sessions we use bilateral stimulation to forge adaptive associations between networks of information stored in the brain to decrease reactivity to triggers.
