Have you suffered from a Narcissistic abusive relationship? Do you tend to be a caregiver at the expense of your own needs? Toxic relationships are not limited to romantic partners, they can be with our parents, siblings, friends, and even work relations. These kinds of experiences leave a lasting, negative impact on one’s mental and emotional well-being resulting in a life-long trauma wound. This can leave us in a state of perpetual anxiety, depression, isolation, confusion and codependency, and possible addiction. In my therapy practice, I address the root causes of codependent behaviors which stem from early childhood experiences in dysfunctional family systems, resulting in our ineffective behavioral patterns today. I also have extensive experience working with those who have struggled with addiction and Borderline Personality Disorder.
In our first session together, I will need to start by gathering background information which includes any history of trauma, abuse, or sexual abuse, religious or spiritual beliefs, any substance use history, and any mental health symptoms and the duration and frequency of the symptoms. I will ask what you would like to focus on in therapy and what your goals are for therapy. This will give me a baseline of your strengths and supports and the direction for therapy to begin.
I am very knowledgeable about common gaslighting and manipulation tactics frequently used by Narcissistic or toxic individuals. I am also familiar with the struggles and emotional turmoil growing up in a dysfunctional family can have and the engrained feelings of guilt and shame that is internalized that can prevent individuals from making the best, healthy decisions for themselves in order to achieve happiness.
I was trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2021. I use this therapy model to assist my clients with healthy processing of traumatic or distressing memories.
There are many things in life that are outside of our control that we cannot change, I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques to help my clients to accept the things they cannot control and instead, focus on the things they do have control over and focus on living their life based on their own personal values.
I received training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) in 2020, it is a therapy model used to assist clients to process traumatic events in their life, identify stuck points or firmly held beliefs, and develop a healthier, more balanced outlook on life.
Sometimes we need to slow down and reconnect with the current moment, I utilize a Mindfulness based approach to help my clients become recentered.
Sometimes due to past traumatic or distressing events, we develop an inner critic in our heads and can have difficulty believing in ourselves or seeing possibilities for the future. I use CBT based interventions to gently challenge negative thought patterns developed from traumatic experiences.
