Welcome! My name is Felipe Lau, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I received my Master of Arts in Counseling from Montclair State University with a concentration in Community Counseling. I am a bilingual therapist and can conduct therapy sessions in English and Spanish. I have 16 years of experience as a mental health professional with the opportunity to work with various ages and backgrounds in different clinical settings. I have experience providing individual therapy and use a person-centered approach. I utilize concepts and tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-based therapy, and Supportive counseling.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our first session, I will get to know your background and together, we will identify your challenges and goals, for example where you want your life to be a month, six months, or even a year from now. Then, we will identify options and strategies you can use to get there. You'll leave the session with a better understanding of your challenges and some practical steps to start improving how you feel. There will always be room for suggestions concerning our work together, including keeping each other accountable.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I believe in building a trusting relationship that leads to the empowerment of my clients. In our work together, my priority is for you to feel safe in being yourself and expressing your experiences. I have been described by my clients as having a disarming quality and my clients typically are able to get to know me and feel comfortable discussing their lives rather quickly. I am passionate about normalizing mental health treatment and I believe that access to mental health care is a right and not a privilege.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been using CBT in my practice and it has helped dozens of clients challenge reoccurring thoughts, persistent challenging feelings and manage their anxiety, depression and other issues. We will use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other and how they create your worldview. We will then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead a less overwhelming and stressed life.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I enjoy using MBT because it integrates principles of mindfulness practice with mental health therapeutic techniques. A significant topic that we tend to ignore in our daily lives is the connection that exists between our minds and our bodies. MBT aims to help individuals develop an increased awareness of their thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations in the present moment without judgment. Once we become aware of how this process is unfolding within us, we can work on reacting with more clarity and intent to the difficult life situations that happen in our lives.

Supportive

I understand that at times, individuals simply need a safe space to discuss daily issues and feel heard. Supportive counseling is an intervention aimed at providing emotional and psychological support to individuals facing various challenges. The primary goal is to help clients feel understood, validated and encouraged as they navigate their concerns. Supportive counseling is typically short-term and goal-oriented, focusing on immediate issues and helping clients manage daily stress, improve self-esteem and overall well-being.
