I first started as a psychologist in Cuba and worked specifically with children and adults predominantly family dysfunctions and behavioral problems. I then came to the U.S. and worked as a case manager, which gave me a more hands-on experience in the field. This opportunity inspired a more rounded approach to the way I can help clients and their families. I now work as a counselor with a more wide-spread clientele. Thanks to this background, I’ve had experience working with all age groups and different cultures, as well as different sexual orientations. I prefer to adjust my therapeutic methods to my client’s needs, but I mostly practice psychoeducation, person-centered, and CBT.
In the first session the client will talk about their presenting problem and I will educate them in how the therapeutic process is and what to expect from it.
I use psychoeducation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is working with clients in changing the way they look at reality and their interpretation of events rather than trying to change the reality. I used elements of family therapy, Person-Centered, and existentialism.
I feel my biggest strength is in working with teenagers and their families. I am also experienced in working with the elderly. The symptoms I deal with most frequently are adjustment, anxiety, depression, and parenting skills.
I like working with individuals who are interested not only in alleviating symptoms but also in personal growth.
