Hello, I’m Aarti, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in California. I provide compassionate telehealth therapy to clients across the state. As a South Asian (Indian/Desi) first-generation college graduate, I bring a deeply culturally attuned perspective to my work. I specialize in supporting South Asian adults navigating the unique intersections of family, culture, identity, and mental health. Areas I help with include: Intergenerational family conflict and parent-adult child relationships. Academic and career pressure, perfectionism, and burnout. Pressure around marriage, newlywed adjustments, and family expectations. Anxiety, depression, and people-pleasing patterns. Cultural identity, belonging, and the “between two worlds” experience. Trauma, intergenerational wounds, colorism, and body image concerns. First-generation and immigrant family dynamics. In our work together, I create a warm, non-judgmental space where you can finally set down the heavy things you’ve been carrying; intergenerational expectations, the exhaustion of perfectionism, quiet grief, and the constant balancing act between cultures. You will feel truly seen and understood without having to explain the weight of “log kya kahenge,” why guilt sometimes feels heavier than sadness, or why asking for help can feel like a betrayal of your family or culture. “South Asian” refers to people with heritage from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and parts of Afghanistan. Many of us were raised with strong values of family, collectivism, respect for elders, and community, while learning to navigate Western individualism. I hold space for the specific challenges that arise from these experiences: intergenerational trauma, marriage and career pressures, colorism, spiritual questions that Western frameworks sometimes miss, and the ache of feeling “too brown here, not brown enough there.” You don’t need to translate your reality here. Whether you’re struggling with family expectations, identity, or simply want to feel lighter and more authentic in your life, I’m here to walk alongside you.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, I create a warm, welcoming, and culturally attuned space where you can share your story at your own pace. Without pressure to explain your cultural background or family dynamics. We’ll begin by getting to know each other. You’ll have the opportunity to share what brings you to therapy, your goals, and the challenges you’re facing (such as intergenerational expectations, identity struggles, anxiety, or family pressures). I’ll listen with care and without judgment, and we’ll collaboratively outline how we can work together. My priority is helping you feel safe, understood, and respected. Many South Asian clients tell me they appreciate that they don’t have to translate their experiences; whether it’s the weight of “log kya kahenge,” perfectionism, or navigating life between cultures. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clearer sense of how we can move forward. Together, we’ll set gentle, realistic goals so that future sessions feel focused and supportive. I look forward to building a trusting, collaborative relationship where you feel truly heard and supported as you move toward healing.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring a unique combination of professional expertise, lived experience, and cultural insight to every session. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a South Asian (Indian/Desi) first-generation college graduate, I offer more than clinical skills — I offer deep cultural understanding. I know firsthand the pressures of balancing family expectations, collectivist values, and individual needs in a Western context. This lived experience allows me to truly see you without requiring you to explain basic cultural realities. Key strengths I bring include: Cultural attunement: I naturally integrate South Asian values, family dynamics, and intergenerational patterns into our work rather than forcing a purely Western framework. Deep empathy & validation: Clients often tell me they finally feel understood, especially around topics like “log kya kahenge,” perfectionism, guilt, colorism, or the ache of living between two worlds. Trauma-informed & practical approach: I blend evidence based tools (such as CBT, mindfulness, and attachment work) with gentle, compassionate exploration of intergenerational wounds and identity struggles. Non judgmental presence: I create a safe space where you can be vulnerable without fear of shame or cultural misunderstanding. Collaborative style: I work at your pace, honoring both your personal goals and your family/cultural context. My greatest strength is helping South Asian clients feel safe enough to release what they’ve been carrying, while building resilience, boundaries, and authenticity that honor who they are. You will leave sessions feeling heard, lighter, and more empowered to navigate your life.

My treatment methods

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

My approach to therapy is culturally sensitive and culturally responsive. As a South Asian (Indian/Desi) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and first generation college graduate, I bring both professional training and personal lived experience to this work. I understand that standard Western therapy models often overlook the cultural, familial, and intergenerational contexts that shape South Asian clients’ lives. That’s why I integrate culturally sensitive practices into every session. This means I honor core South Asian values, such as family collectivism, respect for elders, and community interconnectedness. While supporting your individual well-being and personal growth. In practice, my culturally sensitive approach includes: Creating a space where you never have to “translate” your experiences (e.g., the weight of “log kya kahenge,” intergenerational guilt, or the tension of living between cultures). Exploring family dynamics, identity, and trauma without pathologizing your culture or family. Adapting evidence-based tools like CBT, mindfulness, attachment-focused work, and trauma-informed care to fit your cultural and spiritual worldview. Addressing unique issues such as colorism, perfectionism driven by academic/family pressure, marriage expectations, and the immigrant/first-generation experience. Balancing individual needs with family responsibilities in ways that feel respectful and realistic. My lived experience as a South Asian woman allows me to intuitively understand the unspoken rules, emotional burdens, and resilience within our communities. This shared cultural lens helps reduce shame, build trust faster, and create meaningful change that feels authentic to who you are. Ultimately, culturally sensitive therapy with me means you’ll feel truly seen. Together, we’ll gently unpack what’s heavy and build tools for healing, boundaries, and authenticity that honor both your roots and your growth.

Motivational Interviewing

I integrate Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a core, collaborative approach in my practice. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with extensive training in MI, I use this evidence-based method to help clients explore and resolve ambivalence about change in a gentle, non-judgmental way. MI is particularly powerful for South Asian clients because it deeply respects autonomy and personal values — something that can feel at odds with strong family and community expectations. Rather than telling you what to do, I partner with you to uncover your own motivations, values, and reasons for change. This helps reduce internal conflict and builds sustainable momentum. In practice, my approach with Motivational Interviewing includes: Using open ended questions, reflective listening, and affirmations to help you explore mixed feelings around topics like setting boundaries, pursuing career authenticity, marriage decisions, or reducing perfectionism. Honoring cultural tensions, such as balancing “log kya kahenge” with your personal well-being without pressure or shame. Evoking your inner strengths and cultural resilience to create change that feels aligned with both your individual goals and family values. Collaborating at your pace, especially when addressing anxiety, depression, people-pleasing, or intergenerational patterns. My lived experience as a South Asian first-generation woman allows me to apply MI with cultural sensitivity. I understand how guilt, duty, and loyalty can create ambivalence, and I help you navigate these gently so that any steps forward feel empowering rather than disloyal. Together, Motivational Interviewing helps you move from feeling stuck to feeling more confident and clear about the changes that matter most to you.

I've only had one session, but I already feel that Aarti is in my corner. I really get the sense that Aarti has helped many people like me, and it helps so much to know that Aarti's experienced with the intricacies of mood disorders. Aarti has already started helping me pinpoint some root causes of my current issues and identified things we can work on together. Looking forward to more sessions!
