My dream clients are members of the BIPOC community is someone who is deeply committed to their personal growth and healing. This client recognizes the impact of systemic racism on their mental health and is ready to actively engage in therapy to address the unique challenges they face in the workplace. They are open to exploring the intersections of their racial identity, work environment, and emotional well-being, and are motivated to develop strategies for resilience, empowerment, and self-compassion.
In a first therapy session, a client can expect for us to start building a foundation of trust and understanding with me. The session will typically involve: Introduction and rapport building through introductions, explanation of my approach to therapy, and discuss confidentiality to ensure the client feels safe. Discussion of concerns and what brought them to therapy, including current challenges, symptoms, and goals for treatment. Assessment and background information through client’s personal history, including any relevant family, medical, or mental health background, to better understand their situation. Also, setting goals and how to collaborate and collectively set initial goals for therapy, outlining what the client hopes to achieve. Explain of the process and what therapy sessions might look like moving forward, including the frequency of sessions, potential therapeutic techniques, and any homework or activities that may be part of the process. Questions and concerns of the client and ensure they have the opportunity to ask any questions or express concerns about therapy. The first session is a time to establish a connection, clarify expectations, and set the stage for a productive therapeutic relationship.
Having 8 years of experience, I have developed a deep understanding of trauma and workplace stress, which allows me to offer culturally sensitive and relevant support to my clients, and your commitment to empowering Black women and BIPOC individuals. I have a unique ability to create a safe, affirming space where clients can explore the intersections of their identity and mental health which sets me apart and enables me to guide them through healing and personal growth with empathy and expertise.
I gradually guide my clients through confronting the memories and situations that trigger their trauma in a supportive manner. For workplace stress, this might involve discussing specific incidents of discrimination or microaggressions they’ve faced, and helping them process these experiences in a way that reduces their emotional charge. I also focus on cultural identity and spirituality in the healing process and incorporate culturally relevant practices and encourage clients to draw strength from their cultural heritage, spirituality, or community support networks, integrating these into the TF-CBT framework.
I empower my clients to use their voice to advocate for themselves in the workplace. Whether it's setting boundaries, addressing microaggressions, or seeking systemic change, I help them build the skills and confidence needed to navigate these challenges.
This is helpful in addressing racial trauma and workplace stress by encouraging one to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment, which reduces the emotional impact of these stressors. ACT helps people focus on what truly matters to them, such as their cultural identity and values, rather than getting caught up in the pain of their experiences. By committing to actions aligned with their values, people can build resilience and navigate workplace challenges with a sense of purpose and empowerment.
