I am an experienced therapist and University professor with a 40-year focus on mental health and healing. I am trained to integrate spirituality into treatment, if it is important to the client. I am inspired by the human heart and soul and desire for my clients to find relief, be vitalized by vision, and seek to live a vibrant life filled with love and hope. I value honesty and feedback and am open to learning what is valuable to you, how you desire to be treated, supported, and how you best learn and grow. I practice both short-term, problem focused therapy with results from 1-6 sessions as well as more long-term, growth-oriented treatment that might span some years or support the client through various life transitions.
In the first session I help you identify why you reached out for therapy, what you are hoping to achieve and relieve through the process and identify key relationships and experiences that have contributed to your present state. I will construct a suggested plan of treatment and timeline with you to bring relief and results. I will reflect the hope and possibilities I see for you in working with me. I am open to your asking about my background, experience, and perspectives so that you can determine if I am a good fit for you as you decide on a therapist.
My greatest strengths lie in my 40 years of experience as a therapist, my cross-cultural teaching and treatment in several different countries and in various Universities and populations. I am a compassionate, empathetic, reflective listener who hears below the surface of words to provide a "safe holding environment" and confidential context for my clients. I am trained in dream work, trauma therapies, couples, family and child dynamics, and a variety of approaches to be able to select unique individually based treatment tailored to you.
I view health and identity through a lens of early childhood attachment and development. Many of the pains and challenges we experience in life can be traced back to parental/family experiences, repetitive negative beliefs, and injuries to self-esteem and the lack of coping skills. In therapy attachments to self and others will be explored inviting healing to happen from empathy, accurate/deep listening, and restoration of choice and power and perception. My training in Object-Relations, Attachment/secure attachments, EMDR, and trauma work in ETT all combine for a wholistic, comprehensive treatment.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and Emotional Transformational Therapy (ETT) are two treatments utilized for rapid healing of trauma, phobias, and overwhelming experiences. I integrate these treatments into ongoing talk therapy to identify when these tools are best utilized for relief and shifting of emotions/cognitions.
I utilize The Grief Recovery Program by John James and Russel Friedman for normalizing and accepting the impact of grief and loss. The program allows for consistent and steady healing of the heart with processing and practical actions to shift emotions and aid in recovery from sadness and loss due to death, divorce, job loss, and the end of emotional attachment/relationships.
If spirituality is meaningful to the client, I have specific training in the integration of healthy spirituality supporting strong mental health and relational growth. I explore the history of the patient's beliefs and resources and utilize them to support positive cognitions, actions, and perspectives. I have studied and trained in a chaplain-like program exploring the basic tenants of the major religious beliefs and practices.
