Hello, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas. I have been working in the field of helping others for almost twenty years. In my early career, I stared off as a school counselor helping and supporting elementary age children learn coping skills needed to thrive in a school setting. As my students grew and developed, I did too! Professionally, I grew and mature and transitioned to working in the community with adults who, just like my students, need support in learning coping skills to navigate the challenges in life.
In our first session, I typically like to provide the client with an opportunity for him/her to ask the therapist questions about process and procedures. Following this, we usually begin by diving into motivations for seeking an appointment. This helps me understand what the client's goals and expectations are, and what the primary concerns to target in our treatment plan.
In the last ten to fifteen years I have developed my skills in providing positive regard towards the client. I see the value in providing empathy and compassion towards my client. I have realized that "seeing" the client, the person, first from a humanistic lens vs. seeing the problem(s), creates a path to making positive and desirable outcomes.
Acceptance Commitment Therapy is one of my "go-to" tools in supporting clients living with negative thinking patterns that lead to harmful feelings of anxiety or depression. It's practical and effective. I love that in ACT you can incorporate the use of other skills such as Mindfulness and the identification of Values as tools to enrich our lives and achieve best results.
One of my favorite therapeutic approaches is Emotionally Focused Therapy. EFT is based on the theories of Attachment, which we ALL have experienced and can relate to. It is one of the most effective approaches I use with clients who are struggling in relationships with intimate partners, friends, or family members.
I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I found the value in it's tools because it borrows some of the best skills from other approaches such as CBT, Mindfulness, and Radical Acceptance Therapy. It is an effective approach that supports individuals who live with thoughts of self-harm, disordered personality traits, chronic anxiety, and peer-relational problems.
