I am a licensed clinical social worker with more than 25 years of experience. I work from a strength-based, compassionate, and empathetic approach. I have learned much from my clients and believe in the power of the human spirit. Our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual selves need to be in balance to achieve well-being. This can be accomplished through developing insight and engaging in therapeutic relationships. The theoretical approaches I use are cognitive behavioral (CBT), trauma, feminist, relational, and rational emotive behavior therapy. I use experiential therapy techniques when applicable, such as the healing power of the natural world, including animal-assisted therapy. Psychoeducation is also part of therapy. The client is the expert for themselves. The treatment plan goals are your treatment goals, not mine. Goals are set after exploring the presenting problem/challenge. Goals include corresponding action/intervention steps with start and finish dates.
I strive to have open and informal communication with clients. Building rapport from the beginning in a mutually respectful manner is the foundation for interventions. I strive for a collaborative experience for the client. The first session will be a get to know you and begin discussing treatment goals.
My life experiences and volunteering to advocate for abused and neglected children led me to a master's degree and career in social work. Social work is a calling, not just a "job." I pursued social work, not only through providing individual therapy, but also as a clinical supervisor, university social work instructor, and mentor. I am currently finishing a doctorate in social work. It has been a continuous journey of learning. I bring many years of experience in different types of social work, but always with a focus on the client. client strengths and how to navigate the systems that impact us.
CBT (Cognitive (thinking), Behavioral (actions) therapy is an approach that focuses on the integration of thinking, feelings, and behaviors. It is time limited, goal oriented, evidence based, and collaborative. It is about making changes. Mindfulness and coping strategies are some of the skills learned with CBT. CBT is easily adapted to many of the challenges client bring into treatment. It is a highly effective therapy.
SFBT is future focused, goal directed and focuses on solutions rather than the problems clients present with. It is short term and evidence based therapy that includes positive principles and helps clients change by coming up with solutions rather than focusing on the problem. This helps the client to become motivated, achieve and sustain desired changes.
This approach is a short-term intervention for persons who have experienced the destructive effects of trauma. This can be trauma experienced as a child, as an adult or family trauma. A diagnosis of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is present.
