You have already taken your first step towards healing, and to you, I send the warmest welcome. My diverse background in the field includes a BA in Psychology from SUNY New Paltz as well as a master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco. During and following my education, I have gained 9 years of direct comprehensive experience working with at-risk children, young adults, and families. In addition, this work in the community of San Francisco, along with my work with adult clients, has given me extensive experience treating a wide range of mental health diagnoses including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma disorders, and personality disorders in the context of both individual treatment and family dynamics. I am looking forward to meeting you and witnessing your journey toward healing.
In our first session I focus on building rapport and allowing my client's to tell their story. I emphasize both personal history and current tribulations. By the end of the session I emphasize collaboration. When collaborating with my clients I set incremental goals which provide room for insight and behavioral change. I emphasize autonomy and awareness. Progress is measured by a collaboration between me and my clients to examine the effectiveness of coping skills as well as the level of insight gained throughout their treatment journey.
I take an active listening approach with my clients with an emphasis on matching language and demeanor. I utilize a direct but compassionate communication style that encourages dialogue and collaboration. I am also eclectic in my approach and am able to mold my practice to each individual client based on their needs and unique presentation.
I look forward to working with anyone who is willing to challenge themselves and examine their mental health in both an individual and a systemic context. We live in a chaotic era and our day-to-day existence is impacted by the material as well as the existential. I do not discount the spirit of the times and see the importance of recognizing how these factors affect and potentially exacerbate the mental health struggles present with my clients. Emotional pain and the feeling that we are not in control of our own thoughts can drag us into dark places. I wish to give you the tools to regain that sense of control, heal, and, if you so desire, find purpose and a greater sense of self in a time when every week can bring new challenges. You are already on your way!
I have used the psychodynamic modality for 9 years which has given me extensive experience in helping clients develop insight into how their psychological self developed as well as identifying and understanding their defense mechanisms. It believe it is important for clients to understand the how and why in order to build a strong awareness as to provide a strong foundation for behavioral change.
Once client have developed insight and awareness, I apply cognitive behavioral techniques to inspire behavioral change if that is what they are seeking. Through this modality, clients will learn how to identify maladaptive thought patterns and apply skills to restructure these thoughts. I will also work with my clients to set incremental goals for change for a wide range of behaviors.
