I am a licensed psychologist with many years of experience in cognitive behavioral therapy. I have had success using CBT to treat anxiety, panic, anger issues, insomnia, and chronic pain. Treatment is goal oriented, skill based, and backed by research. I think that it is very important to learn to judge yourself and the world less harshly. I believe that our unrealistic thoughts and expectations are major contributors to our discontent. I have found that some of the concepts of Eastern and Stoic philosophy can help put our lives into better perspective. I particularly like the aspects of psychology that are based on science. As a field, we know a lot about how people learn and how early experience shapes our current moods and behavior. I also like to incorporate current ideas in neurology and physiology that support behavior change.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

My first contact with you will center on identifying your presenting issues. I will take a history of your significant past experiences and treatments. I will explain the basics of the CBT approach and introduce you to a simple relaxation technique. We will explore your world view. We will work out your treatment goals. I will assign homework materials to get you started.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

CBT uses a variety of strategies to help you differentiate between what you can control and what you can't. One of the most important CBT concepts is called reframing. That is the process of examining and replacing negative and catastrophic thoughts. Mindfulness training helps you to quiet your thoughts and reduce ruminations. Philosophical discussion is important to help you explore your core beliefs and to develop a framework for organizing your behavior. Assertiveness training is an excellent approach to effective communication and anger management.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My treatment model is focused on changing your thoughts and changing your behaviors. Insight is nice, but if you want to alleviate your distress, you will need to commit to change. I will not fix your problems but will help you to learn more effective coping skills. If you accept the reality that we are just imperfect primates dealing with an absurdly confusing world, I can probably help you.
